Representatives must sit on at least one committee. How will you work with your fellow student representatives and committee members to solve problems, raise awareness, or make changes at UMD?
A lot of students are hesitant to speak up about issues because of anxiety or just general hesitance towards critiquing things. I’ve always been a very outspoken person. I’ve never hesitated to speak up for what I or the collective believe in.
Describe any leadership experience you have.
I was president of BSA at my high school from 2021-2022. I led a volunteer project in 2023 to assist 5th & 6th graders transition to middle school. In 2023 I also co founded a club and was co president of the club. We amassed over 80 members and I was a role model for the freshman and sophomore female class.
Describe the relationship between Student Government Association and the student body. Explain how you as a leader and a member of this collaborative organization might strengthen and/or maintain this relationship.
The student government is the overarching voice for the students in the same way the federal government speaks for the people. Although every student does not directly make decisions or voice their opinions to the higher ups. They are able to have their voices heard through their representatives.
Diversity of opinion is one of Student Government Association’s most important characteristics. In many cases, you will have individuals expressing opinions that are different from your own. How might this idea be beneficial when making critical decisions for the organization and the student body? How might you handle a situation like this as a representative?
As a woman and a person of color I often possess the “different opinion”. My intersectional identity has opened me up to others opinions because I know how it feels to not be heard. I will always hear someone out regardless of whether I agree with them or not.
What is a song that you think describes you?
