What are Initiatives?
Initiatives are formal plans that are drafted to introduce a change or action. UMDSGA members write initiatives to spark changes in university policy, issue official statements, and enact revisions of our Constitution, Bylaws, and practices. SGA's members review initiatives during weekly meetings and use majority vote to decide whether to support or oppose the initiative. Read about some of our recent initiatives below!
Recent Initiatives
Bus Buddies
Throughout 2024 and 2025 our Sustainability Committee invited UMD students on trips across Duluth to get familiar with the city's public transportation system. Not only did we get to see some awesome community locations and events, including Bentleyville Tour of Lights and the Great Lakes Aquarium, but we helped students become more comfortable with a sustainable form of travel!
SGA hopes to continue this initiative in the coming years.
Revitalizing Sno-Week
Many years ago, UMD used to host Sno-Week which was a week in the winter for students to participate in snow-related activities and traditions. In 2025, UMD SGA brought this tradition back and featured awesome activities, including Hot Chocolate and Harmonies, Pool Tournaments, and more!
Check back in Spring Semester of 2026, when SGA hopes to bring this tradition back again.
Introduction of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee
In October of 2024, UMDSGA officially instated an internal Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee to improve the organization's commitment to including, supporting, and protecting diverse opinions and perspectives across campus.
Removal of ‘Chief’ Title Resolution
In March of 2024, UMDSGA removed the ‘Chief’ title from all officer titles as a step toward cultural sensitivity and acknowledgement of the historical and ongoing impact of language on Indigenous communities.
Positive Posters
In November 2024, UMDSGA designed and distributed posters around campus with positive, encouraging messages to promote positivity and Bulldog well-being.
SGA hopes to continue this initiative into future semesters.
